BC Forestry Climate Change Working Group

British Columbia enjoys a wealth of natural resources that, with careful stewardship and judicious policy development, will allow BC to be a global leader in reducing greenhouse gases.  The province’s vast forests represent one of the most significant carbon reservoirs on the planet and, through a combination of forest management, green energy production and forest product substitution, the sector is capable of achieving more than one third of the government’s stated greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target.

  1. Our collective vision for the BC forest sector in 2020 is that of a provincial and global leader in combating climate change, as realized by:

  2. Forest management practices that sequester and store more carbon dioxide (CO2)

  3. Forest company operations that reduce fossil fuel use and produce, use and sell carbon neutral (or green) energy from wood residues and beetle killed forests

  4. Construction practices in BC and worldwide that use more wood so as to continue to store the carbon originally sequestered by the trees and replace less CO2-friendly products like steel and concrete.
